RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS

Individual psychotherapy for men dealing with relationship problems.

The issue is often obvious. You keep having the same argument. Your partner says you have become distant. Separation has been mentioned. Or both of you have stopped talking properly because you already know how the conversation will go.

You can work on your part even if your partner never comes to therapy.

Why people come

People often look for therapy when the relationship has become difficult to ignore. A partner may be talking seriously about leaving, or the same conflict may have been repeating for years without either person knowing what to do differently.

Problem-solving does not always help

A partner says they feel ignored. You explain why you were busy. They hear another explanation for why their experience should make sense to them. You hear an accusation that ignores everything you have been doing.

Both people can have a valid account of what happened and still repeat the same interaction.

In therapy we look at what happens next, not only at which account is factually stronger.

Withdrawal, anger and defensiveness

People protect themselves in different ways.

Some go quiet because they are trying not to make things worse. Their partner experiences the silence as indifference or punishment. Others become angry quickly because anger is easier to organise than hurt, fear or feeling trapped.

Understanding the pattern doesn’t excuse harmful behaviour.

Resentment and avoidance

Avoiding conflict can reduce tension in the moment and build resentment over time.

You agree to something you do not want, decide it is not worth the argument and carry on. Months later, you may be angry about decisions your partner did not know you opposed.

Therapy can help bring those disagreements into the open before resentment becomes the main way they are expressed.

Should I stay?

Therapy doesn’t assume that the relationship should continue.

You may love somebody and still not want the life you have together. You may also feel completely done on Tuesday and much less certain by Friday.

We look at what is actually happening, what keeps repeating and what you are prepared to do with what you learn.

Individual or couples therapy?

Individual psychotherapy is for your experience and behaviour. Couples therapy is for both people when the relationship itself is the focus.
